We are interested in studying the interactions between axons and myelinating cells. Formation
of compact myelin profoundly alters the axon resulting in a large increase in axonal diameter within myelinated axonal
segments. Axonal diameter along with myelination are two key factors that influence neuronal conduction velocity. By generating genetically
modified mice, we are addressing the role of the axonal cytoskeleton in establishing axonal diameter and in diseases of motor neurons.
Examples of research questions:
- What role do neurofilaments play in radial axonal growth?
- What role do neurofilaments play in pathogenesis of disease?
- Neurofilaments are heavily phosphorylated? Why?
